Mini Album Tutorial

Last week I posted the video I found on Youtube (from: MySistersScrapper) that explained how to make a page base for your mini album. Today I will give you the measurements and try to show how I put my Christmas Mini album together.

As you will notice I am not using Christmas paper, but the design is the same and the way to put the album together is the same (just different papers).  This also shows you how versatile this design is, it can be used for any occasion, the possibilities are as endless as your imagination.  So, if you are not looking to make a Christmas album, get creative, grab some different papers and let’s make a mini!

I made two page bases for the Christmas Album they were 5 x 5  to do this start with a 10 x 10 square and score at the five inch mark, then turn and score again.  Once that is done you need to cut on one (1) of the scored lines to the middle of the page where all of the lines intersect.  Fold the two(2) sections away from you onto the remaining are that was not cut, then, fold this in half.

This is what you need for the rest of the Album:  (everything is in inches)

2 pieces chipboard 5 3/4 x 5 3/4

1 piece chipboard  5 3/4 x 2 inches

2 pieces card stock 6 3/4 x 6 3/4 (cover)

1 piece cardstock 6 3 /4 x 4 1/4 (spine)

2 pieces cardstock 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 (same color as cover)

1 piece cardstock 5 x 5 7/8 (binding for pages to sit on)

12 pieces pattern paper 4 3/ x 4 3/4

1 piece pattern paper in the following:

   4 7/8 x 2 1/2, 4 7/8 x 1 7/8, 4 7/8 x 1 5/8

(these pieces are for the two pockets and the strap)

1 piece card stock 4 7/8 x 5 1/2 (tag)

2 pieces pattern paper 4 5/8 x 5 1/4 (tag mat)

small piece of ribbon

Embellishments to your liking!

Next we need to close up the page base.  I cut a 1/2 inch x 5 inch (this is not in the  materials listed above) scrap of paper and folded this in half (lengthwise), put double sided tape on the outside parts of the fold.  This will be placed between pages 3 and 4 and will produce a side pocket for a tag.  Pic 1

For the last page of this page base I cut a scrap to 5 1/2 x 2 1/4 inches and scored each short side at 1/4 inch.  I then attached this to the side of the last page to form a side pocket for cards or pictures.  Pic 2

On the second page base I cut a piece of scrap to 2 1/2 by 5 1/2 and scored this on three sides at 1/4 of an inch (this will be your pocket) for page 3 or 4.  For this page base I put double sided tape on the back side of page three (3) and stuck page four (4) to this (there is No side pocket for this page base).  I then attached the pocket to page 3.  Pic 3

For the last page of this page base I cut a scrap to 5 1/2 x 1 3/4 and scored on each short side at 1/4 (this is a strap that cards or pictures can be inserted behind).  Pic 4

Now, for the binding.  Cut a of card stock in whatever color you are using for the inside of the album cover to 5 x 5 7/8 and score landscape (the long side) at 1/2 inch intervals.

Next fold all the score lines and then unfold.  Now skip the first two sections and on section 3 and 4 apply double sided tape skip the next section and apply tape to sections 6 and 7 skip the next two sections and cut away anything that is left.  Go back and remove the tape paper and stick the two sides together.  you have just made the peaks that the page bases will sit on.  Set this aside and we will come back to this later.   Pic 5 & 6

For the Cover of the album you will need to cut two (2) 5 3/4 x 5 3/4 squares  from chipboard and one 5 and 3/4 x 2 inch for the spine of the album.  you will also need your cover paper (cardstock) for the album cut to 6 3/4 x 6 3/4 and one cut at 6 3/4 x 4 1/2.

To put the cover together, put double sided tape on the chipboard squares (5 3/4 x 5 3/4 pieces) and lay one edge on the edge of your cover paper, centering the best as possible, then you will cut the corners down to 1/8 of an inch from the chipboard.  Put tape on all edges of the chipboard and paper, then fold over and stick the paper down to the chipboard (repeat this process for the other piece.  Pic 7

For the spine place tape on all sides of the chipboard (5 3/4 x 2 piece) and center on the pier of paper you cut for the spine 5 3/4 x 4 1/4).  Then you will put double sided tape on the outer edge of this paper and right next to the chipboard.  Take one piece of your cover and center on the spine paper lining up with the chipboard and leaving an 1/8 of an inch space between the two (press down to attach the pieces together.  Repeat this process for the other side.

We will now go back to the binding.  Place double sided tape on the back side of the binding (the flat part) and on the spine.  Center the binding on the spine both side to side and top to bottom, press down to adhere.   You will now fold up the top and bottom of the spine paper to cover the binding. Cut two pieces of cardstock  (5 1/2 x 5 1/2) in the same color as used for the cover of the book, I attached these to the inside of the album taking care not to go over the into where the book cover and spine fold.  I attached these two pieces with liquid glue (whatever glue you usually use, as long as it dries clear).

The cover of your album is now complete. Pic 10

To mat the pages for the album I cut pattern cardstock (in Christmas print, but you can use any paper you wish) to 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 this will leave you with 1/8 of a border when these pieces are centered on the page (I also used my liquid glue  to attach the mats to the pages).  You will need 12 mats as there are 12 pages in this album.  You will also need a three pieces of pattern paper for the  two pockets and the strap these should be cut at:  2 1/2 x 4 7/8.  4  7/8 x 1 7/8 and 4 7/8 x 1 5/8.  When centered on the pocket and strap you will have an 1/8 of an inch border around each.

I have found that it is much easier to mat the pages before you attach them to the binding.  Once your pages have been matted and you are happy with them you will attach them into the album:

To attach the first of the page bases,  you first need to put double sided tape on both sides of the  binding that stick up, this is what the pages will be mounted on.  Now take your first page and attach it to the first spine  (remove the tape paper and attach the back part of your page to the spine) go over the where the page and spine meet a few times to make sure there is good adhesion.  Repeat the process for the other page use.  Pic 11

To make the tag that fits in the side pocket of the page base, cut a piece of cardstock 4 7/8 x 5  1/2 (I rounded the corners of my tag).  Cut the mat at 4 5/8 x 5 1/4 and also rounded the corners of the mat before attaching to the tag (attach with liquid glue).  Before placing the tag into the side pocket I punched a hole in the middle of the tag and added a piece of ribbon.  Pic 12

The album is now complete, embellish the front cover of the album and gift or embellish the pages as well before gifting, unless of course you are keeping the album for yourself!

This is my first tutorial and I am sure there are things that could have been explained better.  I have included pictures, if there is part that you have questions about please contact me and I will try to clear up the confusion.

As Always, Happy Crafting Stephanie
